NYCitizenship Program VISTA

NYCitizenship is an NYC Department of Social Services (DSS) program which provides free assistance to vulnerable immigrant clients, helping them get US citizenship. This allows them to receive greater social security benefits and bring their family members here. Our VISTA member would maintain and analyze program data, work with our legal partners, and create mailing lists. They would also engage in research and planning to identify ways to improve outreach, find community partners, and expand the reach of the program to more of the people who need it most. This is a terrific opportunity to learn about a massive government agency. You’ll be able to see the diversity of the DSS client base firsthand, and work with people from all over the agency and with our legal partner. If you want to help combat poverty in NYC at its roots while making connections that will last, this is a real opportunity to do that. You can find more about our agency at https://www1.nyc.gov/site/hra/index.page This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community. Member Duties : The VISTA will maintain our database through daily updates to our tracking and outreach spreadsheets. The VISTA will assess program data to create recommendations on methods to increase client response rates, and searches through agency databases to find client documents we have on file. You will gather information for reports and identify areas of difficulty for our clients. Good Excel skills are essential. The VISTA will also conduct research to find which immigrant communities are underrepresented in our program, which ones would benefit most from our work, and which additional populations may be added. This will culminate in the creation of a full proposal of ways to expand the program which contains all relevant data, information on community partners, and anticipated challenges. Strong research ability and knowledge of how to interface and develop relationships with community-based organizations are crucial.
