Concrete Jungle Programs and Operations Summer Associate

Concrete Jungle transforms overlooked and underutilized fruit trees and land into a healthy food source for communities in need. Since 2009, we have donated 1,521,504 pounds of fresh food (6,086,017.52 servings) to hunger relief organizations in Georgia. We have done this by: educating and engaging volunteers to identify and harvest fruit trees around Atlanta; gleaning from farms and orchards across Georgia; cultivating vegetables on our urban farm, providing produce education to clients, mapping fruit trees, expanding our programming to a branch in Athens, GA, and more. We started as a volunteer organization in 2009, creating fun, innovative ways to solve issues of food waste and food insecurity. Since then, we have grown into a 501(c)3 with 4 full time staff, 12 part time contractors, and thousands of dedicated volunteers. Each year we increase our harvest by 50-200%. We believe we have been successful because of our very engaged and enthusiastic volunteers. This AmeriCorps opportunity is a project of Harvest Against Hunger, which connects local growers, food banks, and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. The Harvest VISTA program finds innovative ways to decrease the waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce for food bank clients. The Summer Associate (SA) program will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks.

Member Duties : The Summer Associate will have the opportunity to experience summer in Georgia to the fullest by providing on the ground support for CJ’s various programs. Specifically, the Summer Associate will assist with fruit tree and farm picks, nutrition education events, Produce Buyers Club, and CJ’s Farm & Orchard. This may include pre-event logistics and communications, volunteer coordinating on site, and produce distribution post-event. In addition to program support, this role will ensure the CJ machine continues running smoothly by assisting with resource management– inventory, vehicle care, office support. Depending on the Summer Associate’s skills, experience and interest, additional capacity building projects could include contributing to research, protocol development, fundraising, etc. Note that because of the nature of Concrete Jungle programs and events, the Summer Associate may be asked to work some evenings and weekends.
