*MTCC AmeriCorps Summer Member - YWCA Missoula

YWCA Missoula is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. We believe that everyone has the right to a life free from violence and discrimination, with access to safe, decent housing and the resources to pursue their dreams. We are determined to create a community where all people, regardless of gender or race, have opportunities for growth, leadership, and power. YWCA Youth Services, and the GUTS! (Girls Using Their Strengths!) program in particular, empower young women and gender-diverse youth and provide learning opportunities to excel in leadership and STEM-related fields. Youth Services also supports families who are experiencing houselessness and other financial difficulties, providing space for children to grow, learn, and thrive. Although we do not require financial information from participants in Youth Services programming, we estimate that 25-50% of our GUTS! participants are low-income, and 75-95% of our non-GUTS! Youth Programming participants are low-income. The Montana Women’s Foundation points to a lack of education and job training, as well as teen pregnancy, as factors preventing Montana women and girls from attaining self-sufficiency. Many of the problems of Montana’s communities stem from the generational effects of systemic problems, such as poverty, teenage pregnancy, and school drop-out rates. GUTS! provides girls and gender-diverse youth with the opportunity to connect with strong figures in their community, develop leadership skills, and engage in hands-on STEM service-learning projects and curriculum. The benefits of this experience are felt by participants, as they are more likely to stay in school, set and reach goals, and achieve a higher standard of living in the future. These benefits ripple out to their families and community members both immediately and in the future.
