Vashon- Picnics in the Park Summer Meals Program Associate

The mission of the Vashon Food Bank is to work in partnership with our community to increase the island’s food security and to connect people with the supporting resources they need to thrive. We envision a future where the basic needs, including housing, food and healthcare, of all islanders are met, and all of our programs are grounded in the shared values of respect, self-determination, dignity, adaptability, equitable access and reliability. The Vashon Food Bank strives to be an anti-racist organization and to play a role in dismantling systemic racism in food systems. This VISTA Summer Associate position will work in direct support of our much-loved Picnics in the Park Summer Meals Program, which has served free lunches to hundreds of island youth, five days per week over the summer months when kids don’t have access to meals in school, since 2014. Like so many programs serving the general public, PitP had to undergo some major adaptations after the onset of COVID-19, including shifting from on-site meals and engaging activities to meal pick-up and remote delivery. We’re excited, in 2022, to be adapting the program, once again, by bringing lunches back to the parks along with fun games and activities. The VISTA Summer Associates will work in partnership with paid program staff to ensure effective and efficient program delivery and to build program capacity by improving data tracking and institutional memory. This AmeriCorps opportunity is a project of Harvest Against Hunger, which connects local growers, food banks, and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. The Harvest VISTA program finds innovative ways to decrease the waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce. The VISTA Summer Associate (SA) program will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks.
