Local Food Production VISTA Summer Associate

In recent years, disasters and extreme weather have seriously disrupted Nebraskans’ ways of life. For vulnerable populations, facing this results in devastating reduced income, limited access to food and services, and heightened stress. The mission of Nebraska Extension is “Helping Nebraskans enhance their lives through research-based education.” We are the public outreach and engagement branch of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), we develop and deliver meaningful educational resources and experiences to people of all ages. Our VISTA program is committed to creating innovative disaster recovery and resiliency programs that protect and support communities from the frontlines and champion sustainability. The Local Food Production VISTA Summer Associate will perform direct service work related to the production of fresh fruits and vegetables to meet the needs of low-income communities and reduce food access disparities caused by COVID-19, income inequalities, and racial inequality. Our Summer Associate will provide 10 weeks of hands-on direct service through assisting with growing, harvesting, and distributing produce alongside program participants. We are looking for someone who is passionate about hands-on, grassroots work in food access and ensuring the success of refugee and immigrant farmers. Our ideal member is ready to tackle exciting challenges, enjoys the outdoors, is comfortable with tools, and likes working both independently and on a team. Our Summer Associate will work in a highly engaging environment where they collaborate with VISTA service members and local food producers while growing an innovative, relevant skillset. This position is located in Omaha, which is a vibrant city with plenty to offer in arts, recreation, education, and culture. For more information, contact Julien Hoffman, julien.hoffman@unl.edu.
