Language Access VISTA

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) promotes the well-being of immigrant communities. Approximately 60% of New Yorkers are immigrants or children of immigrants. One in four New Yorkers has limited English proficiency and may need language assistance. MOIA prioritizes three broad goals: enhance the economic, civic, and social integration of immigrant New Yorkers; facilitate access to justice for immigrant New Yorkers; and advocate for continued immigration reforms at all levels of government in order to eliminate inequities that impact New York's immigrant communities. The VISTA member will support MOIA’s Interagency Initiatives & Language Access team to implement the Citywide language access policy, to expand language access to City information and services, and to build tools and resources to support immigrant inclusion across City agencies. The VISTA will help to organize events and communications, contribute to policy analysis, and research best practices and organizational change. The VISTA will be exposed to the range of municipal government agencies and services and approaches to ensuring that government is equitable, inclusive, and effective. The ideal candidate will have an interest in government communications and operations, language, and immigrant issues. Written and spoken proficiency in a language other than English is preferred, as are strong writing and analytical skills. This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community.
