Clinical and Special Populations VISTA

The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), Office of Community Schools’ Students in Temporary Housing (STH) team works to meet the educational needs of youth experiencing homelessness. The needs are significant—Nearly one in every ten students in the DOE is affected by homelessness at some point during the school year. The STH VISTA, Capacity Building will work to enhance a sustainable social work internship program—where school-based social work interns deliver wraparound social-emotional supports to highest needs community schools—that supports students experiencing homelessness. Moreover, the VISTA will build a robust engagement strategy for the STH field-based staff Affinity Groups (Bridging the Gap Social Workers, Community Coordinators, and Family Assistants) to help share promising practices, resources, and more. The STH VISTA, Capacity Building will also provide support for field-based staff in building resources for students and families, ranging from toolkits to in-kind donations. This role is a great professional development opportunity for an individual seeking experience within the education sector or in topics related to homelessness and social work. The STH VISTA, Capacity Building will have the chance to take on various leadership roles during their service year. Networking opportunities will also be plentiful. To learn more, visit https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/special-situations/students-in-temporary-housing. This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community.
