NYC Housing Policy VISTA

This VISTA member will be housed within the Policy Development and Special Initiatives unit (PDSI) at HPD. PDSI is an interdisciplinary team within HPD’s Office of Policy and Strategy composed of policy and data analysts, technical researchers, and project managers. PDSI seeks an AmeriCorps VISTA member with experience or interest in policy research, data analysis, and/or financial analysis. The VISTA will receive individual support and mentorship from PDSI leadership and will work with leadership across the Office of Policy and Strategy and personnel in a wide range of roles around the agency. By working with PDSI, the VISTA will gain not only expertise in the housing policy issues New Yorkers face today, but also first-hand experience in how the agency’s responses are developed. This includes not just the generations-long housing crisis confronting New Yorkers, but also the rollout of rental assistance in response to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This VISTA position is a part of the NYC VISTA program, a group of 25+ VISTA members serving in New York City Government agencies supporting their anti-poverty work. The NYC VISTA program is administered by NYC Service, a division of the Office of the Mayor. This position is supervised directly by a city agency staff member and will be a part of the larger NYC VISTA community. Member Duties : In HPD’s Office of Policy & Strategy an AmeriCorps VISTA member will have the opportunity to work on several projects depending on their skills and professional development goals. We will work with the member to determine a set of projects that balance their interests with team needs, and the member is welcome to pitch projects. Ongoing projects include the following: tracking the proposals by local, state, and federal legislators to evaluate impact and feasibility; providing the agency’s working groups on housing tax incentives with technical analysis and advice; collaborating within HPD and with other agencies to better understand the extent of evictions in the City-sponsored portfolio of apartments; harnessing housing as a vehicle for household economic mobility; and expanding the City’s support for shared equity forms of ownership.
