Orleans County Natural Resources Conservation District (Orleans County NRCD) is to protect and enhance the soils and waters of Orleans County by providing leadership, education, and services for the adoption of sound land stewardship practices. We are a non-regulatory agency that promotes clean water and healthy soils with farmers and other land stewards. The Conservation Assistant will assist Orleans County NRCD’s Agricultural Specialist and Riparian Lands Manager in providing technical guidance to land stewards throughout the county in enhancing the efficiency of soil sampling and the ability to monitor and assess riparian tree plantings, drone flights, and restoration projects. This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board AmeriCorps (VHCB AmeriCorps). The VHCB AmeriCorps program supports the innovative dual-goal approach to creating stable affordable housing opportunities for Vermont residents while preserving the natural and working landscape. VHCB AmeriCorps is a national service program that places members with non-profit housing or land conservation organizations around the state This position is Quarter Time: Requires 460 hours of service for an average of 40 hours per week for 13 weeks. Member will receive a living allowance of $8,074 (pre-tax), and an education award of $1,923 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Member Duties : ·Assist Agriculture Specialist to conduct soil sampling throughout Orleans County ·Assist Riparian Land Manager throughout the Memphremagog Basin to conduct field site visits, data collection and mapping using ArcGIS Fieldmaps and Survey123 and prepare assessment reports. oPlant trees and shrubs in fields and riparian areas (edges of streams and rivers) oMaintain and monitor plantings through weeding, watering, brush clearing, etc oSupport staff in capturing aerial footage for projects by serving as visual observer for Remote Drone Pilot oDevelop a plan for implementing Environmental Biophysics Systems for Trees for Streams (TFS) monitoring operations. oData entry for program activities ·Maintain equipment for position related activities ·Participate in an Independent Service Project under the guidance of VHCB AmeriCorps (optional initiative for QT members). ·Participate in all VHCB AmeriCorps Program Initiatives & outreach activities to promote AmeriCorps.
