SerVermont - Green Mountain Transit VISTA

The mission of GMT is to promote and operate safe, convenient, accessible, innovative and sustainable public transportation services in the northwest and central Vermont region that reduce congestion and pollution, encourage transit-oriented development and enhance the quality of life for all. Green Mountain Transit provides access through fixed route public transportation to jobs, grocery stores, medical appointments and key destinations throughout our service area. GMT also provides shuttles from senior housing complexes to local supermarkets and neighborhood specials for student transportation to Burlington schools. In addition, GMT also provides demand response medical shuttles, and service to elders and persons with disabilities.

Member Duties : The VISTA project at GMT would be focused on meeting the following goals: increased community participation, strengthened operating systems, and increased coordination between poverty-focused programs and other community services. The VISTA would work on the following strategies and objectives: • Help manage and grow a volunteer-based outreach team. This team will act as additional eyes and ears for the organization and help expand the use of transit through a travel training program. The first year of the VISTA cycle was focused on developing the program and associated materials and structure. The second year of the program will be continuing to recruit and grow in both Chittenden County as well as a bigger push in our rural GMT service area. We also may expand the program in year 2 to provide onboard assistance on a more regular basis for passengers who need help. • Through feedback gathered, the VISTA would assist GMT in adapting outreach messages for our riding public.
