Campus Compact - University of Maine Bodwell Center (22-23)

Campus Compact for New Hampshire's AmeriCorps VISTA project connects change-makers to critical projects supporting low-income students at K-12 schools, colleges, and universities across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Members build capacity within these educational institutions to fight poverty. This program provides members with up-to-date professional development preparing them for careers after service. These skills also give members the tools and knowledge to provide great service to their site. Members will serve in a cohort model that creates an opportunity to learn from peers, share their own experience in the program, and create a community of like-minded individuals. If you are ready to make a difference, our program wants you to serve here in Northern New England!

Member Duties : The Bodwell Center was created in 2005 to facilitate experiences for our students that foster a sense of civic engagement. The Black Bear Mentors program began in 2004 and the Black Bear Tutors program is 2014. These programs match UMaine student volunteers with youth in the community for social and academic support. The Bodwell Center also manages the Black Bear Exchange, the on-campus food pantry. UMaine was the first campus is Maine to open a food pantry for students, and in 12 years, the need and the program have grown substantially. Even with COVID restrictions, the Bodwell Center worked in-person for the 20/21 school year, and we have been able to resume nearly all in-person programming in the 22/23 school year. The University has strict COVIDS protocols, including vaccination and testing requirements the AmeriCorps will be required to follow. Vaccination clinics and testing are provided on campus at no cost, and teleservice can be arranged if the member must remain at home.
