2022 Resident Services Summer Associate

This Resident Services VISTA Summer Associates will be hosted by LUCHA located in Chicago, IL. LUCHA is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website. LUCHA (the Spanish word for “struggle”) advances housing as a human right by empowering communities- particularly the Latino and Spanish-speaking populations- through advocacy, education, affordable housing development and comprehensive housing services. LUCHA’s Resident Services Program serves with low-to-moderate income households in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. Many of these households are Latino and African American in composition and are affected by low levels of homeownership due to discrimination and lack of access to affordable lending opportunities, loss and deterioration of affordable housing stock, and the lack of affordable housing for low-income residents. The VISTA will work with Resident Services to aid in ensuring food security for our families, as well as improve our wrap-around services to make them more comprehensive and cohesive. The VISTA member will help keep families fed throughout the year without gaps by coordinating with existing community partners and creating a food services schedule that we can use for the duration of the upcoming year. LUCHA would also like to increase wrap-around services by having recurring programming including a support group for the single mothers we serve throughout the rest of the year. The VISTA member will evaluate the needs and interests of the population being served to acquire volunteers and guest speakers. Additionally, the VISTA member will create a structure for these recurring programs.
