This project will increase access to food resources by expanding the Double SNAP Dollars program into more rural, Tribal, and year-round grocery outlets, and help build equity and economic opportunities for beginning farmers and ranchers. Local food access is growing in the western and more populous part of the state, there is still a lag in local food access in rural and Tribal communities of Montana. Access related challenges associated with rural landscapes, such as distance to market and small populations, and low wages associated with high levels of poverty also affect local producers in the state. Despite these challenges, the demand for affordable, healthy, and local food is growing. Double SNAP Dollars (DSD) matches SNAP benefits dollar-for-dollar, up to $30, in the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. DSD helps incentivize healthy behavior change, promotes economic resiliency and self-sufficiency by building social capital. This VISTA project will move low-income Montanans out of poverty by expanding access to local foods, and increasing food sovereignty in rural and Tribal communities in Montana. Located in Missoula, MT!
