2022 Habitat Construction Volunteers Leader Summer Associate
This Construction Volunteers Leader VISTA Summer Associate will be hosted by Will County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH) located in Joliet, IL. WCHFH is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website. Habitat for Humanity partners with people in our community, and all over the world, to help them build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With your support, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and for their families. We are recruiting for six of these positions to coordinate and prepare construction jobsites alongside and under the direction of the WCHFH site supervisor. They will then greet volunteers, participate in morning briefings, train volunteers in the tasks of the day and work alongside them. During that time, we expect them to be able to advocate for the importance of affordable housing and our mission, ultimately working to recruit first time volunteers into advocates of our programs and long-term volunteers. Our ideal candidate does not have to have a background in construction. We can teach them what they need to know, just as they will teach others. They need to like working with people and enjoy teaching and mentoring. Being organized and able to multitask is a plus. Having a good sense of humor and being a team player are very important. Being able to provide examples and show a history of discovering new ways to do things, learning new things, and accomplishing challenges with a group are ways to stand out.
