Charleston- Reading Partners Summer Associate

Reading Partners SC provides an evidence-based tutoring program year-round, and during the summer months in school and community-based programs. Tutors work one on one with students using the proven curriculum to help students make gains and avoid the typical summer slide. Education is considered a key component to resolve the poverty crisis. Basic literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning and future success. It is also a critical stepping stone that helps low-income students break the cycle of poverty. Reading Partners’ overarching goal is to help close the reading opportunity gap among low-income youth. To do this, we leverage the power of hundreds of community volunteers and partners, to deliver one-on-one, skills based instruction using a gold-standard, research-based curriculum that gets results. Summer programming is an important priority for the organization, as 80% of students living in poverty do not maintain their level of reading over the summer months. For years, Reading Partners has offered summer programming in collaboration with the City of Charleston and Charleston County School District to mitigate these losses. This year, we are faced with a larger challenge due to Covid. The impact of COVID-19 on educational outcomes has been devastating. It has had a negative impact on reading proficiency for our community’s most vulnerable students due to extended time away from the classroom and the lack of resources at home, making summer interventions even more important this year.
