Mountain Health Gives strives to pick up where the limits of health care, coverage, and assistance end. According to the Montana's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data, over 11% of Montanans are unable to get medical care because of the cost. Even though there are free health clinics and local non-profits, there are many families who go without medical services or must choose between food, housing, or health. Montana is one of only ten states that does not mandate vision screenings for school-aged children, leaving many families without the care they need to succeed in school and life. A 2021 study by Johns Hopkins University showed that kids with uncorrected vision do poorly in school, have lower self-esteem, are more likely to fall (and stay) behind in school, and have behavioral problems. According to Prevent Blindness America, untreated childhood vision disorders can impair a child’s physical and cognitive development and acquisition of learning skills, with long-term effects on educational outcomes. Children who receive proper vision care are much better equipped to function academically and socially. Studies show that students in need of glasses that received care had academic gains of up to four additional months when compared to children in need that did not receive care. This project will alleviate poverty by assisting low-income families with accessing preventative healthcare that keeps them healthier and with better overall well-being. This will allow them to participate in educational opportunities that lead to their ability to be financially secure, maintain a home, and remain a productive member of society, while ultimately reducing healthcare costs for all.
