2022 Cowley County Farmers Market VISTA Summer Associate
 
 
 
The Cowley County Farmers Market Association VISTA Summer Associate member will build the capacity of the ArkCity Farm and Art Market and the Walnut Valley Farmers Market by partnering with local producers and consumers in Cowley County, Kansas to expand access to healthy foods. This VISTA position will impact poverty by engaging SNAP and SNAP qualified audiences to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. As a result of the VISTA member’s service, 80% of distributed Double Up Food Bucks will be redeemed, SNAP customers at farmers markets will increase 25% from 2021 and systems will be created for education, outreach, and marketing.

Member Duties : The Summer Associate will assess the current state of community engagement and awareness of the Cowley County Farmers Markets and create or revise programming and marketing to improve its effectiveness and sustainability. The Summer Associate will also develop and implement programming and marketing/outreach for SNAP recipients and children for weekly markets. The Summer Associate will develop and implement surveys, interviews, and polls for vendors and customers at the markets that determine how the Farmers Market impacts populations of focus (low-income, racial and ethnic minorities, veterans, WIC recipients, industry workers, young adults, and others to be determined. The Summer Associate will set up outreach systems and develop partnerships with community organizations, local businesses, and public education institutions to increase knowledge of SNAP Recipients, children and adolescents, young adults, seniors, and other focal groups about food resource skills and nutrition.
