JJ Legacy Montessori - Environmental Education VISTA

The Minnesota Alliance With Youth VISTA program places members in nonprofits, government, and schools in the Twin Cities to create, connect, and leverage resources to address education inequities such as the opportunity and achievement gaps. We build capacity, coordinate efforts that bridge and build the integration of school and community-wide support for youth, and actively engage youth as agents of change in closing these gaps. Our 20 person cohort meets regularly for professional development, team building, and peer support. This position is placed at JJ Legacy Montessori School. JJ Legacy's mission is to provide an excellent and equitable Montessori education in North Minneapolis to an intentionally diverse community of students. The school educates students with the vision of developing the character strengths, social and emotional skills, creativity, passion for learning and college-preparatory academic capabilities that will enable them to lead lives of joy and purpose. The Environmental Education Coordinator VISTA will serve as a capacity builder in the school community to increase educational equity and cultural relevancy within our school and community through environmental learning, both in and out of the classroom. The Environmental Education Coordinator VISTA will develop the environmental education program by reviewing past environmental education practices within the school, developing a curriculum scope and sequence for all grades, incorporating and researching best practices, developing and strengthening partnerships to provide innovative programming, and ensuring culturally-relevant environmental learning experiences across the school. The aim of the project is for students to develop life-long skills and a deep understanding of the environment and their responsibilities to its stewardship as Legacy Builders.
