MTCC AmeriCorps Summer Member - Garden City Harvest

Garden City Harvest (GCH) was established in 1996 in response to federal government cuts to entitlement programs as a proactive, long-term solution to food insecurity. GCH’s mission is to plant seeds and grow together to create a healthy community. GCH envisions a connected community where everyone values and has access to healthy, local food. GCH operates a network of four neighborhood farms, ten community gardens, and seven school gardens, at 20 sites in Missoula, Montana. The nonprofit intentionally grows more than 40,000 pounds of fresh produce every year for those in need, working with local service agencies to distribute that food. GCH runs educational Farm to School programs and youth employment programs, respectively serving more than 6,500 elementary school children, and 50-65 teenagers living in high-risk situations each year. The Youth Harvest Project (YHP) employs disadvantaged youth, ages 15-18, to work on our urban farms. Through YHP’s farm-based, work program teens learn to work together as a team, acquire sustainable farming and business skills, and grow as individuals both personally and professionally. Beyond farm work, YHP implements group support, educational activities, and community engagement to enhance personal development, and create a sense of community and belonging.
