*MTCC AmeriCorps Summer Member - MAPS Media Institute

MAPS Media Institute is a nonprofit educational organization whose mission is “to empower, inspire, and prepare Montana's next generation for future success through professional media arts instruction, engaging community service, and compassionate mentoring.” MAPS helps young people view their lives through the lens of possibility - engaging with their communities as supportive citizens, while also learning relevant communication skills and experiencing “real world” media arts opportunities. MAPS is a fully immersive, hands-on experience, integrating STEAM curriculum with specific activities and outcomes. MAPS provides professional-quality media arts projects that support youth to challenge themselves, take risks, and learn relevant skills. We also teach students how to use these skills in a career environment. This combination helps prepare Montana students to be “future ready” and find success in their local educational environment that both encompasses and goes beyond career-readiness. The MAPS programming is specific to rural and tribal Montana communities where this type of immersive education is most needed. We serve young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the media arts. This includes students from low-income families who often live in isolated and poverty-stricken parts of the state. MAPS is one proven solution to both educational and media literacy inequities as we believe that creativity, and access to professional instructions and tools to cultivate one’s creativity, have the power to positively impact the wellness, identity, opportunities, and life path for any individual. MAPS originated as an afterschool program to engage 8th-12th grade students in rural communities with the creative and critical skills necessary to become better/more effective communicators, critical consumers/producers, and aware/engaged citizens.
