Children's Defense Fund - Expansion & Evaluation VISTA

The Minnesota Alliance With Youth VISTA program places members in nonprofits, government, and schools in the Twin Cities to create, connect, and leverage resources to address education inequities such as the opportunity and achievement gaps. We build capacity, coordinate efforts that bridge and build the integration of school and community-wide support for youth, and actively engage youth as agents of change in closing these gaps. Our 20 person cohort meets regularly for professional development, team building, and peer support. This position is placed at Children's Defense Fund Minnesota. The Youth Development VISTA will work alongside the CDF-MN Youth Development team to coordinate and execute all programs, with a specific focus on CDF Freedom Schools. They will help develop evaluation plans, assist in the expansion of CDF Freedom Schools. The CDF Freedom Schools program incorporates the totality of CDF’s mission by fostering environments that support children and young adults (known as “scholars” in the CDF Freedom Schools program) to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference in themselves and their families, schools, communities, country, and world with hope, education, and action. By providing K-12 scholars with rich, culturally relevant pedagogy and high-quality books that deepen scholars’ understanding of themselves and all they have in common with others in a multiracial, multicultural democratic society, CDF Freedom Schools programs further empower scholars to believe in their ability and responsibility to make a difference while instilling in them a love of reading to help them avoid summer learning loss. CDF Freedom Schools are rapidly expanding in Minnesota, and the VISTA will assist the Youth Development team in ensuring the program is expanding in a high-quality manner with fidelity to the model. They will also expand CDF-MN’s capacity to demonstrate the impact of the program.
