CCNYPA La Colmena VISTA

La Colmena’s mission is to empower the immigrant community through education, organizing, culture and economic development. By creating a pipeline between La Colmena and CSI, we create needed infrastructure to connect campus to a segment of the immigrant community that has been historically underrepresented on campus. This project will meet AmeriCorps’ anti-poverty goals by serving the economic imperative of immigrant families through New York City’s engine for social and economic mobility. An AmeriCorp Vista-supported partnership between La Colmena and CSI generates a unique and meaningful feeder between a public, anchor higher education institution and immigrant families on the North Shore. For La Colmena, the project is providing an accelerated and supportive process to access higher education opportunities that are customized to meet the needs of non-native English speakers, and families with undocumented members. For the AmeriCorps Vista member, this is an opportunity to create a new and unprecedented CBO and higher education partnership, between local institutions known for their expertise and mission for economic empowerment.
