IL Safe Schools Alliance Development and Outreach VISTA

Based in Chicago, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance (the Alliance) is a program of Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC). The Alliance’s mission is to promote safety, support, and healthy development for LGBTQ+ youth in Illinois schools and communities, through advocacy, education, youth organizing, and research. The Alliance has nearly 15 years of experience working with young people, community organizations, schools and districts, and state agencies towards the goal of fostering safer school spaces for LGBTQ+ youth. Through each of its programmatic areas – youth leadership and organizing, policy and advocacy, and professional development – the Alliance approaches its work as transformational rather than transactional and its programming is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and rooted in equity. The Development and Outreach (DO) VISTA will work with a cohort of VISTAs to support the Alliance program and the Safe Schools Consortia Project (Consortia). The goal of the Consortia is to create regional networks of education leaders who are committed to ensuring their school district(s) are safe and affirming environments for youth who hold LGBTQ+ identities. This project increases the Alliance’s capacity to advance its mission statewide and empowers school leadership to become experts in the Safe Schools Movement. The DO VISTA will support PHIMC’s development initiatives, the implementation of outreach and promotion strategies for engaging school district leadership and education stakeholders, and the development of tools and resources for the Consortia project. The Alliance seeks DO VISTA applicants who are aligned with the program mission, thrive in team-based environments, demonstrate initiative and strong organizational skills, can be flexible and creative, and have a solutions-oriented mindset. Special skills may include some fundraising and communications experience, an understanding of youth development, and an interest in facilitation.

Member Duties : Development and outreach opportunities within the Alliance program and PHIMC as a whole are critical to achieving the organization’s mission and increasing impact. They will support the work described above by strengthening PHIMC’s development and fundraising processes, participating in networking opportunities, creating and implementing communications activities, and supporting the Safe Schools Consortia.
