Homelessness continues to be a problem in the Cedar Rapids area due to a lack of resources directed to meet the very basic needs for all people. Housing is out of reach for many people due to the gap between housing costs and poverty-level income, especially for minoritized populations and people with criminal histories. The issue of homelessness and housing insecurity has only been exacerbated by the pandemic beginning in March 2020 and the Derecho that impacted Cedar Rapids in August 2020. This project will focus on gathering data to show the direct impacts on those living in housing insecurity and those experiencing homelessness the COVID-19 pandemic and the Derecho have caused. The VISTA will facilitate the ongoing cost study project, work with a team of service providers to assess key cost data, pre and post pandemic/Derecho trends, individual local case studies, and best practices related to better housing solutions who are housing cost burdened and experiencing literal homelessness. VISTA will coordinate the team to present this information so that the general public can better understand the needs of the community and become more engaged in solving the problem of homelessness locally. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing capacity building support in higher education and nonprofit organizations. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
