District Bridges Coordinator

Founded in 1867, Howard University's motto, "Veritas et Utilitas," which translates to "Excellence in Truth and Service," has motivated the institution to prepare diverse, talented, and ambitious students to learn and succeed in their respective fields. Howard is nationally ranked in medicine, education, business, and social work by U.S. News & World Report. The university has graduated more black doctors and health professionals than any other HBCU. Howard's commitment to service extends to its community. Our hospital is one of the D.C. region's most significant healthcare providers, particularly the more than 250,000 of Washington, DC's 700,000+ residents are Medicaid eligible or uninsured. We work with local nonprofits and organizations to initiate and operate programs that benefit underserved and underprivileged populations in the District of Columbia. Georgia Avenue is a historic thoroughfare populated by hundreds of small businesses whose operations are under threat due to increased living costs, COVID-19, and lack of financial resources. Howard University and the Office of External Affairs conduct business and marketing outreach to older, small businesses. The BISON (Bison Intentionally Serving Our Neighbors) AmeriCorps VISTA program aims to scale existing investments and bring added support to underserved businesses on the Lower Georgia Avenue corridor. The VISTA will work with District Bridges Lower Georgia Avenue Main, a nonprofit organization focused on revitalizing Georgia Avenue. The VISTA will conduct outreach to businesses, strategize marketing plans, assist with grant applications, review property agreements, and budget operations costs.
