2022-2023 Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement VISTA

This Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement VISTA will be hosted by Chicago Furniture Bank located in the Brighton Park neighborhood in Chicago, IL. The Chicago Furniture Bank is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website. This position can start on November 7, December 5, and January 17. The Chicago Furniture Bank (CFB) partners with 300+ local social service agencies to furnish homes for those leaving shelters and moving into permanent housing. The CFB believes every person should be able to sleep on a bed, share a meal at a table, and do homework on a desk. The CFB currently furnishes 12-15 homes daily and is the largest furniture bank in the country. Through partnerships with Ikea, Amazon, Walter E. Smithe, and many more, we allow clients to handpick the furniture they want for their home in order to provide dignity and comfort as they begin a new chapter in their lives The Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement VISTA will continue to develop our volunteer program. Currently, the furniture bank has less than 4 volunteers a week. Our organization must create a strong volunteer program to continue to expand its capacity to meet the need for our furnishing program. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, have interpersonal skills, and strongly believe in our mission. The CFB is a rapidly growing nonprofit, and candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, startup-type environment.

Member Duties : Our VISTA will be responsible for research, strategizing and implementing volunteer recruitment, engagement and management strategy / procedures for the CFB. We frequently have corporations and individuals wanting to volunteer at the furniture bank, but CFB’s staff has not had the time to manage volunteers. In particular, the CFB hopes to have four daily volunteers assist in organizing the showroom and helping clients select furniture for their homes, have monthly corporate volunteer events at our warehouse, organize a furniture drive / community events every six weeks around Chicagoland (e.g. at a high school), and create a database of volunteers. You will have full support and access to senior leadership whenever is needed, but should be able to work independently to execute high-level tasks. Many members from the community want to help the CFB in any way they can, and you need to organize and manage these individuals / companies to add the most possible value to the organization.
