Campus Compact Gateway Community College
Gateway Community College (GCC) serves the largest number of Pell-Grant recipients in the Connecticut State College and University System. GGC is a campus community that represents a diverse student body, housed in the county with the highest rates of poverty in Connecticut. GCC seeks to increase access to food security for students and employees through the development and implementation of an on-campus food pantry. The member will play an integral role in assessing the current needs of the GCC community related to food insecurity and will help in the design and implementation of an on-campus pantry. The member will work to seek outside funding opportunities, develop partnerships with other food security-related organizations, and create effective systems to track food security efforts at GCC. The member will have the opportunity to be part of a brand-new initiative, serving a community in need. The biweekly living allowance for this position is $613.48. In addition to the benefits listed, the host site will provide a parking pass, fitness center access, and professional development and training opportunities. The AmeriCorps member serving at GCC will be part of a dynamic, motivated corps with Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA. Serving as a member of a corps provides the chance to connect with other members throughout multiple states, create a network of support, and share resources. As the intermediary, Campus Compact, a national non-profit, supports the professional and personal growth of AmeriCorps members through a variety of professional development opportunities and in-person trainings including overnight retreats throughout their service year. Member Duties : The member will be responsible for assessing the current food security needs of the students and employees at GCC. The member will analyze existing data, collect new information, and work with community organizations to evaluate the data related to food insecurity. The member will create awareness through educational programming, marketing materials, and presentations to ensure the GCC community understands the extent and effects of food insecurity, along with encouraging participation in the initiatives through volunteerism, service-learning, and donations. To support the development of the food pantry, the member will research and assist with applications for various sources of public and private funding and develop partnerships with businesses that may support the pantry. The member will be responsible for developing day-to-day operational plans for the pantry, including hours of operation, staffing and volunteer training, inventory, and tracking mechanisms for the pantry.
