Cornell College VISTA; IAMNCC

Cornell offers an innovative and rigorous learning community where faculty and staff collaborate with students to develop the intellectual curiosity, creativity, and moral courage necessary for a lifetime of learning and engaged citizenship. Cornell is a small, private liberal arts school in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The campus utilizes a one course at a time structure, with each course being taught in intense three-and-a-half-week terms. Cornell created a Well-being Network, connecting the Student Health, Counseling, Health Promotion, Spiritual Life, and Advising areas. The VISTA will join the Network in our efforts to build our understanding of and capacity for serving low income and minoritized students, by developing wellbeing programming, assisting in evaluating the Networks' effectiveness in serving minoritized and financially impacted students, connecting students to local resources, and coordinating transportation to medical appointments. The VISTA will use Cornell’s 2021 strategic plan as a tool to devise ways to better support our students. This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***

Member Duties : The VISTA will assess the mental health needs of our students in light of the pandemic, particularly low income and minoritized students, help students navigate health insurance systems and connect students with campus and community resources. The VISTA will support coordination of transportation services to medical appointments, build relationships with student organizations, the Office of Intercultural Life, and the Senior Diversity Officer to identify the needs of students of color and low-income students, particularly financial literacy programs, research technology to enhance wellbeing resources and make receptivity based recommendations, and identify ways to support student success and retention. While each of these are a part of our overall well-being goals in the near future, the VISTA will build on their skill sets to play an integral role in supporting our efforts to create avenues of well-being throughout our campus experience.
