Stewards VISTA: Vision Iron County

Growth and change in Iron County are inevitable; planning for our future is critical. Vision Iron County is a community-based organization that promotes and protects the quality of life in Iron County through representative engagement, regional partnerships, and collaborative strategies. We serve Iron County citizens, organizations, and government by coordinating and advocating for long-term planning that represents a consensus of participating community members through active engagement, partnerships, and accountability. Vision Iron County is in communication with residents and organizations across the county to help shape a long-term vision for the area. We aim to unite and elevate community voices to ensure that growth in Iron County is intentional. Vision Iron County is a fluid process that is meant to reflect community ideals and trends. The vision will change as community desires evolve with forces such as technological developments, population growth, and economic advancements. We want residents, elected officials, planners, developers, transportation officials, educators, entrepreneurs, visitors, and others to work together and develop collective, long-term goals, such as the 12 Key Focal Points, to guide decisions that relate to how our area grows and develops. Twelve Key Focal Points: Manage natural resources: conserve, innovate, and plan. Preserve area vistas and scenic landscapes. Designate areas for industrial growth and agriculture. Improve transportation corridors to create a well-connected community. Create a land use vision with a “placemaking” focus. Keep state and federal partners informed of local efforts to avoid duplication of efforts. Preserve historic buildings and districts. Collaborate with other counties/communities to maximize regional assets. Develop walkable and mixed-use neighborhoods. Support and strengthen SUU’s and S-Tech’s local and regional position. Provide zoning for a variety of housing types. Avoid “leap-frog” growth.

Member Duties : Iron County’s population is expected to double in the next 30 years; the need for a cohesive future-driven vision for what this area will look like, and how it will approach growth and development, has never been greater. The VISTA will: Partner with local, regional, state, and national organizations that advance VIC’s mission. Maintain consistent engagement channels, eliminate ineffective engagement efforts, and introduce new opportunities to build VIC’s network. Collaborate with Iron County residents, visitors, and stakeholders to explore sustainable growth and preservation of Iron County’s culture, heritage, and natural resources. Work with VIC volunteers to maintain continued progress on the long-term vision. Stay up to date with existing efforts to improve the long-term well-being of Iron County. Identify ways for VIC to support these efforts (such as fund development). Identify resources and existing initiatives for VIC to learn from and incorporate into our processes.
