Agraria Center Education Summer Associate

Agraria seeks to expand its partnerships in the region to educate people about the importance of soil health to a healthy food system and increase access to fresh, healthy foods. By engaging farmers, community residents and other stakeholders we will work to build and strengthen the farm-to-table network by increasing access points for fresh local foods; facilitating linkages between producers and consumers; providing for a broader range of local foods that reflect cultural and community needs; and expanding local, food-related educational, entrepreneurial and employment opportunities. Agraria is dedicated to investing in beginning and underserved farmers who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color in supporting and sustaining a robust regional food system, and providing education to farmers around regenerative agriculture practices, food production, food security, and food system economics.

Member Duties : The Summer Associate will assist with summer camps at Agraria and at Melrose Acres, a Center for Urban Agriculture in South Springfield. Studies show that nature based activities improve mental, emotional, and physical health. In addition, learning gardens have a greater impact on children’s tastes and habits than other types of nutrition education, and encourage more healthful food choices. The Associate will assist a Lead Educator during programming for children and families including leading part of the program, help with set up and clean up, group management and conflict resolution, and communication with parents. They will also maintain educational spaces such as learning gardens and nature play areas. Finally, the Associate will maintain and develop the community partnerships that make these programs possible. Community partnerships are what allow our children’s programs to succeed and reach audiences of highest need."
