Agraria Center for Regenerative Practice VISTA

Agraria and Springfield Ohio Urban Plantfolk (S.O.U.P.), a community group, are partnering on development of Melrose Acres, an urban farm and education center in South Springfield, an area marked by food insecurity. Initial funding for Melrose Acres was provided in 2020 by a $500K 4-year USDA Community Food Projects grant, which enabled purchase of a 7.46-acre parcel for food production and an adjoining house as well as program development. Melrose Acres works to build community-based solutions that empower individuals and families to make informed choices about the foods they eat; identify pathways to access healthy foods in their community; learn about regenerative food production practices and skills that can be employed in any residential space; and facilitate strategic partnerships with regional organizations, institutions and area schools and universities. Agraria is dedicated to regenerating our bioregion with a primary focus on the health of both our environment and our communities. SOUP’s goal in South Springfield is to provide multi-faceted solutions to food access and insecurity. The center has established relationships with Wittenberg University and Central State University Extension as well as organizations in Springfield and Dayton to provide educational programming for school-age children and adults, training for beginning farmers, and opportunities for research. The site has a production garden, a perennial berry garden, a fledgling orchard, chickens, bee hives and a hoophouse for season extension. The adjoining house has been updated to house educational and community programming.
