Stewards VISTA: Travelers' Rest Connection (Lewis & Clark)

Travelers’ Rest sits at the crossroads of natural and cultural history. Its 65 acres encompass the only archaeologically verified campsite of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, a gathering place used by the Séliš QÍispé and other tribes for millennia, and a pristine cottonwood habitat along the banks of Lolo Creek. Travelers’ Rest also sits at the crossroads of private support and public investment. Land purchased through grants and private donations became a Montana State Park 20 years ago. Today, Travelers’ Rest Connection supports Travelers’ Rest State Park through outreach, advocacy, and educational experiences connecting the past to the future. The AmeriCorps VISTA position with Travelers’ Rest Connection provides opportunities to develop skills in fundraising, event planning, volunteer management, and outreach. Exceptional communications skills will help the successful candidate in writing grant proposals, connecting with donors, soliciting gifts, and marketing events. Specific objectives of this position include: Researching and writing grant proposals to support indigenous interpretation and exhibit updates. Utilizing fundraising software to improve communications with donors. Start-to-finish planning and implementation of a community volunteer workday. Implementing a volunteer training session. Providing staff support to the planning committee of a national meeting/conference. Creating social media posts and marketing materials. Throughout the term, the VISTA can take advantage of resources and trainings offered by the Montana Nonprofit Association and Missoula Nonprofit Center. Travelers’ Rest Connection will pay for registration to at least one relevant conference (in-state or regional) including travel expenses if necessary. On-site housing may be available for a nominal monthly fee of approximately $100. If there is no room at Travelers’ Rest, the Connection will assist in securing affordable accommodations.
