AmeriCorps Nutritional Education Specialist Position

The goal of the Durham Community Food Pantry (DCFP) is to fill the 1.5 million-pound food shortage in Durham and Orange counties by distributing a week’s worth of groceries to families in those communities once every 30 days. Thanks to the excellence of our last two Americorps members thousands in the community have been helped each month. DCFP is a large-scale food pantry who is currently open for 3 weekly distributions and a monthly mobile pantry. Families receive a nutritionist-designed box of groceries containing pantry staples such as canned vegetables, pasta, rice, beans, cereal, peanut butter, etc. In addition to these shelf stable items, families receive perishable items including fresh produce, bakery items, frozen meat, dairy items, deli items, etc. DCFP is able to distribute large packages of food because of its storage and operations space and the use of an off-site warehouse. The 7,500 square foot facility contains a walk-in cooler and freezer to store pallets of refrigerated and frozen items, as well as a 2,500 square foot warehouse to hold approximately 40 pallets of shelf-stable food items. DCFP sources food by working with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, and local farms and gardens to reclaim perishable food items from the retail market to distribute to families. It also hosts food drives at local churches, schools, and businesses and purchases staple items from wholesalers. In addition to increasing the amount of food in the community, The Durham Community Food Pantry seeks to increase knowledge surrounding food and healthy eating habits. The AmeriCorps member will be a visible and vital member of the DCFP team, offering enhanced services to food pantry clients.
