Stewards VISTA: Continental Divide Trail Coalition

The Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) works in partnership with a growing network of 19 CDT Gateway Communities to protect and promote the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT). VISTA will bolster CDTC’s capacity in the Gateway Community program, support communities trail-wide, and help develop local stewards in partnership to increase resources available to the public and ultimately, access to the CDT. The VISTA will work on tourism initiatives to redefine the identity of these Gateway Communities from mining and extraction communities to excellent and welcoming recreation destinations. This includes supporting the CDT Advisory Committees made of town officials, agency partners, tourism boards, and community members. The VISTA will also recruit and support designations of new communities who wish to be a part of the network. The position will support trail-wide needs in development of information resources for all users in both print and web formats, and specific community web pages to provide visitors information about Gateway Communities and the opportunities they provide to experience the CDT. The VISTA will assist in the creation of promotional materials such as maps, kiosks, and visitor information, and will play a large part in creating and coordinating outdoor programming on the CDT that welcomes new audiences to experience their National Scenic Trails and to recreate responsibly. The VISTA will also help develop a cadre of information and resources that CDTC provides to Gateway Communities, including support in community development, fundraising for the Gateway Community program, help with education & outreach efforts, and opportunities to connect at an annual Gateway Community Summit. The position would serve as a liaison between the local community and the CDTC to address CDT concerns and would work closely with local schools on various outreach and education efforts to engage local youth in the CDT Community.
