Environmental Stewardship VISTA

The City of Las Vegas AmeriCorps VISTA Program supports the planning and implementation of neighborhood revitalization initiatives in our communities. VISTAs will focus on environmental sustainability and equity.Efforts utilize a high-impact service strategy in which the City’s OCS team engages community members in Resilience, and Conservation and Habitat Preservation. The objective of the Environmental Stewardship VISTA project is to cultivate partnerships among stakeholders including; community organizations, city agencies, nonprofit organizations, neighborhood associations, and block groups who can build capacity and serve as volunteers for Environmental Stewardship: Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Building Community. This project is part of the solution to improve conditions and quality of life in troubled neighborhoods to effectively address the problem of concentrated poverty and neighborhood distress. This program will research and develop solutions to current sustainability issues, determine feasibility and implementation opportunities which particularly attend to heat islands and cooling measures and research the current status of the City of Las Vegas and how it compares to other places across the nation. Year two, continue researching what models/program currently exist around sustainability and equity (policies, programs, interventions etc.) and research and review the impacts it has on our most vulnerable populations like low income, minority populations, elderly and homeless. Year three, develop a menu of sustainability options that can be implemented from the short term to long term; Review the work currently done with tree equity, how the City of Las Vegas can ensure long lasting changes; Review current data and program approaches to handle neighborhoods with high energy use; Develop an education and outreach campaign geared towards changing behavior.
