BAG: Communications and Outreach VISTA

Boston Area Gleaners is committed to supporting an equitable, just, and sustainable local food system. We fulfill our mission by building innovative partnerships with local organizations and businesses in order to bridge food distribution gaps, improve healthy food access, prevent on-farm food waste, and create new markets for locally grown produce. Our vision is to sustain a permanent agricultural supply chain that will improve the viability of local farms and the health of communities who have historically suffered from inequity in the food system. In this position, Boston Area Gleaners partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable, community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges and management related to food supply chain, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and growing organizations through storytelling, development, and fundraising. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger and the Harvest VISTA Program aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.

Member Duties : The Communications and Outreach VISTA will utilize digital and in-person communications—including social media, blog posts, and tabling at events—to recruit new supporters and to share relevant information and resources with our community. This role will be an important player in telling the story of the Gleaners’ programs, spotlighting the work of our partner farms and agencies, and giving broader context to the issues of food waste, food insecurity, and food justice. The AmeriCorps member will support communications with our frontline agency partners and develop culturally-appropriate recipe resources that can be shared with community members. The member will analyze data and feedback from previous seasons to strategize around recruiting volunteers and improving the volunteer experience. Ultimately, the goal is to create sustainable methods for the Gleaners to expand its network of collaborators, grow its impact, and promote a more equitable food system in Massachusetts.
