GULB: FruitShare Outreach and Communications VISTA

The Green Urban Lunch Box’s FruitShare Program is a local and creative solution to the global food waste problem. In order to prevent thousands of pounds of perfectly delicious and nutritious fruit from entering the landfill, we partner with local fruit tree owners and abandoned orchards, harvest their fruit with the help of volunteers, then redistribute amongst the community to aid in hunger relief and to local businesses who create value-added products. Not only does this fruit feed our community it also strengthens our local food economy. In this position, Green Urban Lunch Box partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable, community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges and management related to food supply chain, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and growing organizations through storytelling, development, and fundraising. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger and the Harvest VISTA Program aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.

Member Duties : As the FruitShare Outreach and Communications VISTA, the AmeriCorps member works to engage the community through outreach efforts: attending community events, speaking to the public to spread awareness about FruitShare, recruiting new volunteers and fruit trees, and continuing to draft the organization's weekly volunteer e-newsletter. This position will play an integral role in facilitating communication between all of GULB’s partners: fruit tree owners, volunteers, community partners, and local business owners. This role will communicate between partners to coordinate efforts for GULB’s fruit tree services offered, scheduling, and tracking information in our CRM database. The AmeriCorps member will scout fruit trees throughout the valley during the harvest season to determine if they are harvestable. Once this is determined, they will set the harvest schedule for the week. The AmeriCorps member will lead one harvest event with volunteers in the community.
