NPAIHB - Tribal Food Systems VISTA

The Tribal Food Systems VISTA will alleviate poverty by increasing access to local fresh produce in tribal communities in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington with the WEAVE-NW project at NW Portland Area Indian Health Board in Portland, Oregon. The Tribal Food Systems VISTA will assess regional tribal community interests and needs, strengthen tribal food system implementation projects, and increase tribal community engagement in the NW Tribal Food Sovereignty Coalition. The VISTA will build capacity by developing a volunteer recruitment plan, developing a tribal garden co-op directory, creating an evaluation and sustainability plan for the WEAVE-NW VISTA program for year 2, and providing capacity building technical assistance needs to the WEAVE-NW Food Systems Sub-awardees. In this position NW Portland Area Indian Health Board partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program who build sustainable community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges related to supply chain management, like the transportation and distribution of gleaned produce, and create systems to collect data and evaluate programs. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger projects also aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.
