Field Research Specialist - VT Inst of Natural Science/VHCB
 
 
 
Join a small but growing department conducting field studies throughout Vermont. Participate in projects ranging from water quality monitoring in the Ottauquechee watershed to surveying nesting raptors across the state. You will have the opportunity to lead and expand our community science projects and coordinate our research volunteer network. This position offers a chance to spend your term outside serving the avian wildlife of our state. VINS' mission is to motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment through education, research, and avian wildlife rehabilitation. Our programs and services engage and instill in people of all backgrounds a desire to care for the wildlife and diverse natural habitats they encounter in their daily lives. This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board AmeriCorps (VHCB AmeriCorps). The VHCB AmeriCorps program supports the innovative dual-goal approach to creating stable affordable housing opportunities for Vermont residents while preserving the natural and working landscape. This position is Half Time: Requires 915 hours for an average of 40 hours per week for 6 months. Member will receive a living allowance of $16,147 (pre-tax), and an education award of $3,697.50 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Other benefits include health insurance, federal school loan forbearance, and various training and networking opportunities.

Member Duties : ·Conduct monitoring for resighting of color banded Broad-winged Hawks, and surveys for potential nests. ·Conduct water quality sampling and transport samples throughout the Ottauquechee watershed. ·Lead and expand community science projects including nest watch, crayfish monitoring, and amphibian monitoring. ·Conduct inventory and monitor invasive species on VINS properties. ·Participate in an Independent Service Project under the guidance of VHCB AmeriCorps. ·Participate in all VHCB AmeriCorps Program Initiatives & outreach activities to promote AmeriCorps. ·Engage in professional and personal development activities and networking opportunities.
