Stewards VISTA: Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy

As a private-public partnership, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) works closely with federal, state, and city agencies, non-profit organizations, and local residents to improve and support public parkland in Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway peninsula in Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. Encompassing over 10,000 acres of parkland, JBRPC serves approximately 35 neighborhoods and over a half a million residents through its stewardship of Jamaica Bay and Rockaway parks. While the area has many parks and open spaces, these parks are historically underfunded and underserved and continue to be managed with limited resources. Finally, while numerous strides have been made to increase public access to these parks and the waterfront, including the opening of a new state park in Brooklyn in 2019, park and waterfront access remain limited. The area was devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and remains vulnerable to extreme weather and storm surge. VISTA will work to build organizational capacity and serve local communities with a specific focus on engaging underserved residents in education and volunteer programs, while also supporting data management and grant identification efforts. VISTA will improve JBRPC’s growing educational portfolio, supporting program development and program facilitation of citizen science and service-learning based field trips to Jamaica Bay and Rockaway parks. These programs will enable park access and experiences for Title 1 schools and their students, while engaging participant students in the unique ecology of Jamaica Bay and Rockaway parks, the recreational opportunities that they offer, and the ways in which students can become park stewards. VISTA will also support JBRPC’s growing volunteer program, supporting development of a volunteer database and working. with neighboring communities to increase engagement in and access to parkland through volunteerism and community building.
