Stewards VISTA: Friends of Cedar Mesa

Our VISTA project seeks to build a place-based experiential science and social studies education program for local elementary school students. This program hopes to build student proficiency, confidence, and curiosity in science and social studies leading to improved school performance and high school completion. Building and expanding student knowledge and understanding of natural resources will provide greater opportunities for higher education and post-school careers over time moving students and their families towards greater economic possibilities. In the short term, this project will provide economic opportunities for community members through participating as instructors, guides, and presenters. Curriculum development will be designed for both classroom presentation and field trips. Classroom presentations can be implemented by any classroom teacher and could expand the reach of the program beyond San Juan County, Utah providing support to additional communities.

Member Duties : VISTA will develop and implement a robust educational outreach program focused on experiential learning through field trips and hands-on lessons meeting Utah education standards. The work will include research, collaboration with educators and land management, and creation of materials that can be incorporated into classroom presentations and field trips. The VISTA will research and apply for funding to support this educational outreach. The VISTA will work to recruit and engage a diverse group of stakeholders to form our Education Committee - a committee that will include representatives from the Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, current and former educators and school administrators, Indigenous leaders, and parents. Through these efforts the VISTA will grow our organization’s capacity to alleviate poverty and establish sustainable programming and outreach.
