UWCCR Community Partnerships Coordinator VISTA at SCHA Davis

SCHA’s affordable housing cooperatives are shared living-learning spaces that empower low-income residents (or “members”) to educate themselves, organize, and inspire community. Its co-ops strive to be a safer and more accessible space for people with marginalized identities while simultaneously creating space to unlearn oppressive behaviors. SCHA houses 88-90 co-op residents between six co-op houses with 7-15 residents each and “The Domes” – a co-housing community of 26 residents housed in 13 two-bedroom experimental dome homes. SCHA leases three houses (the Tri Co-ops) and The Domes from UC Davis, and owns three off-campus houses. Approximately 85% of all SCHA members are currently students at UC Davis. The 501(c)(3) organization consists of a resident-led Board of Directors and 8 separate subcommittees focused on governance, finance, maintenance, leasing and outreach, land stewardship, communications, conflict resolution, and fundraising and alumni engagement. Each co-op elects its own representatives to serve on the Board and committees, providing an opportunity for every resident to get involved in the nonprofit’s collective democratic self-governance. The co-ops set their own rent, community rules, and administrative procedures, among other standards. They also create community agreements, share food, and cook meals together as houses.
