Stewards VISTA: LEAD Agency

The Tar Creek Superfund Site once was part of the largest lead and zinc mine district in the world, spreading across OK, KS and MO. Today the site includes approximately 104 square km of disturbed land and contaminated water in northeast Oklahoma. Underground mining produced nearly 500 km of tunnels, 165 million tons of processed mine waste, 325 ha of tailings impoundments, and 94 million m 3 of contaminated ground water. Approximately 70% of the Superfund site is Native American owned. In 1993, an Indian Health Service study established that 35% of children had blood lead levels dangerous to human health. Because Tar Creek is heavily contaminated, the site affects downstream communities, nine downstream tribes, and the watershed of creeks, rivers, and the Grand Lake Reservoir, which is a drinking water source. Legacy mining is a driving contributor to Ottawa County’s 18.5% poverty rate. One consequence of legacy mining in Ottawa County is an awareness that the natural world immediately around us is damaged and dangerous because of heavy metals in water and soils. Nonetheless, children continue to swim in poisoned Tar Creek. Across 3 years the VISTA project will restore the community’s broken relationship with nature by creating safe outdoors programs for people of all ages and interests.

Member Duties : This VISTA, Year 1 of our project, will study the region’s environmental hazards and conduct a comprehensive community environmental asset mapping project for the region. It will identify existing and potential human, community, and environmental assets. The VISTA will then prepare a proposed initial suite of outdoor programs utilizing the currently-available assets. The VISTA will also provide support (programmatic, office, organizational, research, etc.) for LEAD Agency’s other environmental justice projects as needed. The balance drawn between time spent on the environmental mapping project and programmatic support will be determined in part by the VISTA’s abilities and interests.
