Communications and Storytelling Specialist

Legal Aid of Arkansas is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization providing free civil legal services to people who need it the most. Every day Legal Aid helps low-income individuals and their families gain access to the justice system. 1 in 4 Arkansans qualify for civil legal aid; 71% of low-income households experienced at least 1 civil legal problem and 86% of civil legal problems reported receive inadequate or no legal help. There is one legal aid attorney for every 10,253 eligible Arkansans. The Communications and Storytelling Specialist VISTA will work to engage community members and empower clients through the work of storytelling. This work will be used to give clients a platform to share their stories and experiencies with the community and spread awareness of Legal Aid of Arkansas as a resource. This VISTA will work from the Rogers office and work closely with the Communication Specialist. They will: -research best practices for storytelling, with a focus on sharing Legal Aid client stories. They will learn Legal Aid’s grant requirements to ensure that storytelling efforts remain in compliance -document their findings regarding best practices within grant requirements for sharing client stories with a focus on respecting the clients story. -work with Legal Aid of Arkansas’ staff to engage potential clients interested in sharing their story. -meet with clients, assist them throughout the storytelling process and record their stories, with prior consent. This work must be done with respect and empathy. -work with Legal Aid of Arkansas’ Communications Specialist to create and deploy social media and web content consistent with program needs. VISTA members benefit from opportunities for leadership, professional development, and career training, and receive non-competitive eligibility in federal hiring after service.

Member Duties : Increase Legal Aid of Arkansas’ capacity in their mission to champion equal justice for low-income individuals and communities and to remedy the conditions that burden and marginalize them by engaging community members and empowering clients through the work of storytelling. This work will be used to give clients a platform to share their stories and experiencies with the community and spread awareness of Legal Aid of Arkansas as a resource. This is a year long project.
