Food Security Coordinator - AzFBN/Ajo CSA (FSI)

Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture is a Native American-governed nonprofit dedicated to building a sustainable and just local food system in Ajo and on the Tohono O’odham Nation. Our programming is aimed at empowering the community to help itself. Our programs include education about food and agriculture for children, youth and adults, microbusiness incubation and economic development. We specialize in revitalizing traditional Native American crops and agri-cultural techniques, and operate dryland fields, as well as provide multi-sided agricultural apprenticeships. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ajo CSA responded to the wide-spread lack of food and unprecedented levels of hunger in our region, and organized a partnership project to aggregate and distribute food to over 2,000 families. We especially focused on providing fresh, culturally-appropriate and nutritious foods, utilizing our wide-ranging farmer networks. We now operate the Ajo Food Pantry which serves up to 500 families a month, most of them Native American and/or Hispanic, which is at about five-times higher levels as compared to before the pandemic. A community food security assessment is needed to move the organization and the community from the emergency response of the pandemic into a longer-term sustainable path in addressing not only hunger but also underlying systemic issues of poverty and social injustices. The Food Security Coordinator will work with the Ajo CSA team, board and partners as well as external consultants, to coordinate a comprehensive community planning project for a more just and hunger-free future.
