City of Philadelphia–Digital Literacy VISTA (LitMN)

The Office of Children and Families manages child welfare, community schools, PHLPreK, the Free Library, and Parks and Recreation system in addition to Adult Education. This project is focused on closing the digital divide. Digital technology is integral to our day-to-day lives; however, recent data from a citywide broadband connectivity survey estimates that one out of three Philadelphians are internet subscription vulnerable. Even when Americans with lower incomes are making gains in tech adoption, the digital divide persists. Without users having the skills necessary to leverage digital devices and high-speed internet, access to these resources means little, and progress toward digital equity will remain elusive. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, adults who are not digitally literate are, on average, less educated, older, and more likely to be Black, Hispanic, or foreign-born. OCF Adult Education is working with several city partners to build a coordinated citywide system where all public doors offer access to digital literacy resources and a continuum of digital literacy opportunities for all residents. One of the key strategies is to standardize digital literacy assessments, curriculum, job qualifications, and training across Philadelphia providers. We are looking for a passionate and committed individual that understands the value of digital equity and that wants to make a lasting change in our community. We are looking for someone that can help us build capacity by strengthening the digital literacy partner network across the city and developing tools and materials to support the adoption, remove barriers, and ensure equitable access to digital literacy and workforce opportunities for all residents. If you are action-oriented, organized, detailed oriented and want to make a lasting impact in the community, this job is for you!

Member Duties : As Adult Education builds out the Northstar digital literacy partner network, it has become clear that organizations need additional support to fully integrate this tool into their programming; and that coordination, integration of activities, and community building is fundamental to remove barriers, ensure access, and establish seamless transitions between providers across a continuum of digital literacy and workforce opportunities available to residents. To ensure access to the digital skills residents need for work and life, we seek to increase and support the adoption of Northstar digital literacy across various Philadelphia provider communities. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN).
