BMVP - Expanding Veteran Health Access via Adaptive Rehab

The Adaptive Performance Center’s mission is: “Making what seems impossible, possible - Ending Veteran Suicide.” Many veterans experience physical and mental health issues as well as barriers to reintegration following service. For example, veterans who struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may also tend to exercise less which can lead to ongoing and worsening mental and physical health issues. The veteran suicide rate in Montana is significantly higher than the national average - and national preliminary data shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these rates, with approximately twenty-five veteran suicides per day. There continues to be a community need to assist veterans with decisions related to their health and autonomy, and the Adaptive Performance Center (APC) must expand in order to provide these much-needed services. Studies show that a fitness environment encourages service member reintegration through physical activity that eliminates pain, improves cognitive function, provides a sense of purpose, and leads to more social incorporation – and as a whole, the APC provides an outlet for members to expand their ability to manage their own lives more successfully. Expansion of program offerings has the ability to empower a population of over 85,000 veterans living in Montana. Additionally, strengthening the veteran population and rehabilitating those members into productive and contributing citizens will have lasting and measurable impacts on both social and economic benchmarks. Examples of these developments directly impacting poverty will be when members move out of homelessness, and/or change career paths to higher earning potential due to physical capabilities being expanded or PTSD symptoms being managed. The development of the veteran community and suicide rate reduction will have long-reaching effects on overall poverty rates.

Member Duties : Expand and improve access to veteran health services and develop a network of physical rehab programs across Montana! The overall goal of this project is to expand and improve access to veteran health services through the Adaptive Performance Center. Due to the multifaceted and multivariable markers that indicate suicide, many aspects of veteran lives will be targeted for improvement and development through the expansion and development of new programming. The VISTA Member will: conduct an assessment of APC members’ health status to determine any gaps in services, improve long-term health strategies, and establish baseline data; create and utilize marketing projects to promote veteran engagement and new events; assist with the expansion of competitive programs that encourage goal-oriented development and personal growth; and develop a diversified funding stream to support the new program expansion and the implementation of a communications and marketing plan.
