AzFBN Volunteer Engagement Specialist

Over one million people in Arizona suffer from food insecurity. Lack of consistent access to food is a problem for one in every seven Arizonans and one in every four children. The need is even higher in Coconino County, with 21% of the population considered food insecure. Over 50% of children in Flagstaff qualify for free or reduced lunch. The Flagstaff Family Food Center (FFFC) provides the most extensive and wide-reaching emergency food support for the Flagstaff community. Through our multiple hunger relief programs, we serve an average of 2,000 people per day. We rely on 20-25 volunteers every day to help run our ten hunger relief programs. Recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers is central to our ability to serve the community 365 days a year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Arizona National Guard filled in for volunteers. Now, the FFFC is beginning to work with volunteers, but it is doing so cautiously. It has put safeguards in place, but it understands that volunteers may not feel comfortable coming in during the pandemic. The VISTA will assist with the unique challenge of responsibly recruiting volunteers during the pandemic. Additionally, the VISTA will help develop and improve an Agency Shopping Program, which offers a shopping-like experience to partnering emergency food providers who are in need of additional food to deliver to their clients. These partnering food banks and food pantries come “shop” for food, which they take back to their own agency, and distribute from there. Thus, the VISTA’s efforts to increase volunteer engagement and improve the Agency Shopping Program will not only increase FFFC’s capacity to better serve the food insecure, but will also increase the capacity of partnering agencies to do so as well.
