Grand Canyon Food Pantry Sustainability Training Coordinator

The image of success and grandeur the national parks create hides the more complicated picture of the real conditions for the people who live and work at the Grand Canyon. With over 6,000,000 visitors, the Grand Canyon National Park is one of the jewels of American Parks. It is not only unique in its physical beauty, but in its demographics. There are approximately 2,500 people who live and work in the park, and no one who works at the park owns their own home; about 12% of the residents are at the poverty level; 21% are food insecure; and none of the park vendors accepts EBT cards. The nearest store accepting EBTs is 70 miles away. The goal at the Grand Canyon Food Pantry, Inc. (GCFPI) is to reduce this food insecurity. We are supported by the Grand Canyon Park with space and utilities, a partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank, and other opportunities. GCFPI is an all-volunteer agency and a solid foundation has been established and it is time to move to a paid management structure. The VISTA is this bridge. The GCFPI VISTA Sustainability Coordinator will address these obstacles and create avenues for sustainability. This will be accomplished by providing a sustainable management model, thus expanding the Food Pantry’s ability to alleviate food insecurity in the Grand Canyon Community. Three specific opportunities will be the focus of the VISTA: to create an effective operational model, to model sustainable development plans, and to create, develop, and post ‘how to’ videos using foods that are available for our community. The VISTA will build relationships, evaluate systems, and implement processes to ensure success. In addition, the VISTA will also create the basic operations and policy manual and will develop and implement long term funding models to allow GCFPI to employ paid staff and create additional avenues to assist those with food insecurity who work at the Grand Canyon.
