Southern WV SUD Recovery to Work Program VISTA Coordinator

The Rural Appalachian Improvement League (RAIL) focuses on building a new, sustainable, social structure and economic base in the southern West Virginia coalfields – striving to make the coalfields a better place to live. RAIL is a small nonprofit with 20 years of experience working to make a difference in the community, giving marginalized individuals the tools, through service, to lift themselves out of poverty. RAIL operates out of the former grade school, which is located in downtown Mullens and from this base has partnered with 20 VISTAs and 7 or 8 NCCC teams. As part of a grassroots organization working with the community for the community, VISTAs experience the charm of small-town life combined with the simple pleasures that come with living in the mountains, surrounded by the magnificent, ever changing world of nature, while doing meaningful much needed work. RAIL’s current initiatives include the promotion of economic opportunities, healthy lifestyles, and tourism.
